Unter den deutschen Pionieren der westlichen Medizin (8, 12) im Japan der Meiji-Zeit (1868-1912) ist der Amtstierarzt Johann Ludwig Janson (1849-1914) sicher einer der bedeutendsten. Im Oktober 1880 trifft er in Tokyo ein und unterrichtet an der Veterinärschule im kaiserlichen Gestüt zu Komaba. Während seiner Tätigkeit wird die Lehranstalt in Komaba in die landwirtschaftliche Fakultät der staatlichen Universität Tokyo integriert. Zahlreiche seiner Schüler haben bei ihm die Approbation erlangt und hohe Staatsämter bekleidet. Von seinen Publikationen verdienen die über Haustiere und Tierheilkunde in Japan besondere Beachtung. Er heiratet eine Japanerin und setzt seine Lehrtätigkeit in Komaba bis zum Jahre 1902 fort. Seine letzte Ruhestätte findet er in Kagoshima, der Heimat seiner Frau. Janson gilt bei den Japanern bis heute als der Begründer ihrer modernen Veterinärmedizin.

Among the German pioneers of Western medicine (8, 12) in Japan during the Meiji-Period (1868-1912), the veterinary officer Johann Ludwig Janson (1849-1914) is one of the most important. He arrives in Tokyo in October 1880 and has been teaching at the Veterinary School in the Royal Stud in Komaba. During his activities, the school in Komaba has been integrated into the Agricultural Faculty of the Royal University Tokyo. Numerous of his students have achieved approbation and occupied high public offices. Among his public-cations those about domestic animals and veterinary medicine in Japan deserve special attention. He marries a Japanese woman and continues his duty in Komaba until the year 1902. His last resting-place he finds in Kagoshima, native place of his wife. Until today, Janson is considered by the Japanese as the founder of their modern veterinary medicine.
